The Coronado Bay Bridge, opened August 3, 1969, spans 2 miles connecting San Diego and Coronado while providing a vertical clearance of 200 ft over the shipping channel.  To achieve this clearance with a reasonable grade, the bridge length was increased by taking a curved path, rather than a more direct path to Coronado.
